Combined Arms Contact - Saving life under fire In war the unit medic is for many the difference between this life and the next. Administering life-saving medical assistance under enemy fire took a special courage and fortitude. In most field deployments the unit medic was a stretcher bearer drawn from the Battalion's band - a musician. This cross-over role of infantryman, musician and medic dates back to WWI. Fully trained specialist medical orderlies of the medical corps, normally employed at the unit's Regimental Aid Post, would also deploy forward. In the 2013 artwork 'Combined Arms Contact' from which this medallion image is lifted, renowned Australian artist, Drew Harrison shows the unit medic wrestling to save the life of a severely wounded digger. Unseen in the medallion is the shelter he takes behind a Centurion and the Hueys rushing in to evacuate the wounded. Between 1962 and 1973 almost 60,000 Australians - ground troops, Air Force and Navy personnel, served in Vietnam. Five hundred and twenty one Australians lost their lives. More than 3,000 were wounded.
